Allergen Testing
Eclipse provides a service for testing
of most of the species mentioned in EU legislation
- this requires warnings to be placed on food products
that contain certain materials known to cause allergenic
reactions in consumers. In the UK this legislation
takes effect on 25 November 2005, as an amendment to
the Food Labelling Regulations 1996.
[This amendment also lists materials
which, although originating from allergenic materials,
are not considered to have allergenic properties and
are therefore exempt from the above labelling requirement].
Tests for the following allergenic species, using mostly
ELISA or DNA techniques, are available: |
Gluten (cereal protein) |

Casein (milk protein) |

Beta lactoglobulin (milk
protein) |

Lactose (milk sugar) |

Sulfur dioxide (preservative) |

Almonds |

Brazil nuts |

Cashew nuts |

Peanuts (groundnuts) |

Pecan nuts |

Pistachio nuts |

Walnuts |

although originating from allergenic materials, are not considered
to have allergenic properties and are therefore exempt from
the above labelling requirement - click here for details

Study links asthma to pesticide use The pesticides that were found to have increased the prevalence of non-ALLERGic asthma included DDT, which is now prohibited in the US, as well as phorate, which is rarely used, and two commonly applied materials: malathion and petroleum oil herbicide. Only malathion has approval for use in the UK and this has recently been revoked. Source: frmrsgrdn, Date and Time of entry: 25 September 2007 12:19
